We were allowed to make any sort of magazine we wanted, from wildlife to animal based or even crafting or carpentry. I however, chose to do a Fashion Magazine and am so happy with how it came out. Chris was my model and I was able to use my Bowens 400/400 lighting kit for the first time. Chris and I took the photo using the Bowens kit and then I manipulated the background and text in Photoshop. Slap in a fake UPC and create some clever/interesting article titles (thanks to Chris and Dave for the help there) and you have yourself a magazine cover. This can be found on Flickr as well.
Assignment 8 was another small flash assignment – specifically small flash while doing an environmental portrait. I like environmental portraits as it shows the subject in their surroundings (environment). These photos can be found on Flickr as well. ![]()

Super excited Alison as she walked down the aisle. I really love the expression on her face.
I have been getting tons of rave reviews for the photos I took while at Nico and Alison's wedding back in July. I haven't quite been able to finish all of the photos I would like so there are still more to come (shortly) but what is done can be found on my Flickr account.
To be honest, I am pretty pleased with how the photos came out and even the bride and groom have mentioned how much they like them. I have even seen some interest from friends/co-workers about shooting other weddings so even perhaps it is something I should start seriously considering.
A self declared package deal (and best of friends), Taylor and Kristen.
Another shot from the Cottage shoot this time of the very pretty Jerrica. It is unfortunate that I wasn’t able to get a formal portrait shoot in with Jerrica before she moved back home – we will have to set that up for when she visits next (hint hint).
This is one of my favourite shots from the Cottage Girls Shoot.
While at the cottage this past May, I had the opportunity to take some quick portrait shots of the ladies before they went out dancing. The above photo isn’t from that shoot, but rather the prep work before the shoot.
A photo of Justin (aka Justain) from the annual trip to Chris’ cottage.
Chris got her tattoo last Wednesday (May 26) as a birthday present from Jerrica and Erin. She asked me to do some shots of her with it and I was of course more than happy to do so. I think it looks fantastic and the shots came out really nicely too. I have a few more shots to process but I think these were two of the best from the session.
Today is her 26th birthday and I am giving her top spot on two blogs though she deserves so much more. A true friend who stands by you through thick and thin, who encourages you to do your very best and reach your highest goals. She has been helping me to become a better person since I first met her in 2003 and I am incredibly thankful for everything she has given and done for me. I feel very fortunate to have her in my life and to be able to call her my best friend.

A wonderful location I enjoy going to on a regular basis is much closer to my home in Ottawa. The Ottawa Greenbelt walkways are simply beautiful no matter what time of year you venture out in. There is lots of adorable animals to see and tons of great locations for environmental portraits. The photo I have included for this area (which is actually a series of paths and trails across Ottawa) is another photo of Dave taken in the Prince of Wales walkway just as you are leaving the city.
A third 'location' is the City of Ottawa and its wonderful festivals. The Winterlude Festival, to me, is associated with the skating on the Rideau Canal and all the joy that brings for me and my friends and family. Last year Dave and I took his sister skating on the canal and I was able to capture some really great family moments there. The Tulip Festival has to be one of my favourite times in this city, though I take very few photos of people at this time of the year. Ottawa has so many wonderful festivals and events going on throughout the year that offer its residents and tourists huge amounts of entertainment and overall enjoyment. I really love living in this city and can really see myself making a real, long-term home here.A while back Chris posted about Grotesque images on her blog - the image she used was one she found on the net of Obama transformed into a lizard creature. I found the image rather unsettling and can still barely look at it. Nonetheless, when I came across some texture images on the net the other day, one of the first things I thought of doing was 'grotesquing' an image I had taken.
The above image is one I took of Chris about a year ago for an assignment at Algonquin. I thought of using this one as one of the textures I had was a bark like material (aka bark) and I thought it might look like she was adsorbing the bark onto her skin.
I have run it past Chris and gotten the okay to post it, even though she thinks it is really creepy. I on the other hand, have gotten really desensitized to it as I have been staring at it for so long.
I don't know if I will be doing many more of these images, as the technique would be pretty much the same for all of them (with little variance) and I think I have gotten the hang of it pretty well here.
Over Christmas Dave's sister, Jess, asked me to take some shots of her playing the guitar for a class assignment she has. Essentially she wanted some shots of her playing, some of her writing some chords/music and some closeup shots of the guitar, etc.
My setup was pretty basic, but I was able to use almost all of my new lighting equipment; the Gary Fong diffuser for my on-camera flash, Nikon umbrella kit and SB-600. I took about 500 shots and quickly edited that down to 300 and then later down to 25 or so edited ones (+40 when you include the fact that I converted some into black and white).
I am really happy with the outcome of the photo shoot and I will obviously be uploading a select few shots to this blog, but I have uploaded all the edited and signed photos to Flickr, if you would like to view them all now.
For the portrait assignment in which I used Chris as a model I got an A. I am really happy with the mark as it is the highest I have gotten in this course so far. I think I was able to break the A- barrier because I enjoyed this assignment so friggen much. Shooting it was really fun and working on the photos afterward was not a chore. I also had the best model in the class, which was definitely a plus. So thanks once again Chris for helping me out.
