Pretty in Pink - Reprisal

>> Wednesday, May 26, 2010

DSC_0550erh A reprisal of Pretty in Pink. I put it through Photoshop and treated it using the art history brush – similar to what I did to the image I used as a header for the Great Abyss.

DSC_0652er

I think this is one of my favourite compositions for Tulip Festival photos. It also happens to be one of my favourite colours/styles of tulips.

The Dividing Line

>> Thursday, May 13, 2010

DSC_0669er For the most part, the arrangements at the Tulip Festival locations change from year to year. The arrangement above placed two colours of tulips directly beside each other enabling shots with dividing lines like this one. Unfortunately the sparse growth of the tulips makes it a little less dramatic, but you get the point.

DSC_0129er

This purple-blue flower was amongst the tulips at Dow’s Lake (Commissioner’s Park). I took it during my first trip to that Tulip Festival location, which turned out to be a good visit as the Tulips are already a little sad looking (likely due to their early bloom).

Daffodils in Spring

>> Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Hogs back park is one of my favourite places to shoot. In the spring they have tons of daffodils near the entrance which I really enjoy.

Tulip Couple

DSC_9984er

It is interesting how the tulips come up a little different each year. This tulip couple wasn’t around last year, which leads me to believe that I will be able to get a whole new set of photographs from the same garden. This obviously makes me very happy.

Persistent Tulip

DSC_9857er One of the first images from my garden this season. It isn’t a very diverse garden, in fact it consists of only tulips in two beds – but they do come in a variety of colours.
This guys was truly determined to get through the earth (and snow) – so much so that he pushed right through this little stick that was on the ground (presumably stuck there with ice and/or snow).

This was the first photograph I took inside the Botanical Gardens in Montreal and is actually one of my favourites, though it is likely due to the purple colour of the flowers.

Purple

I don't know what type of flower these are, but they are really bright and colourful and with the sun hitting them head-on, they just screamed to be photographed.

Iris

>> Saturday, June 13, 2009

I want to plant irises in my garden this year because not only are they beautiful and definitely up there on my list of favourite flowers, but they bloom right after tulips so my garden would be full of life right up to the point where I could plant smaller summer flowers like marigolds, etc. They also need little to no work, similar to tulips, which is good as I do not have a green thumb.

Parliamentary Tulips

>> Wednesday, June 10, 2009

The instructor for my Photoshop course was my main inspiration for obtaining this shot but not in the way one might think. During one of our courses he mentioned that he had been asked to take a shot with the Tulip Festival tulips in front of the Parliament Buildings (most likely meaning the Peace Tower). He told us that since no shot existed naturally this year, he was going to have to Photoshop them together. Without a great amount of effort, Dave and I were able to find two locations where you could get a shot like this. There were others directly out front and if you crossed the barriers around the grass out there, you could have easily get even more shots and some with the bright red tulips that everyone loves.

I thought of doing this as a framing technique a while ago and actually did something along the same lines with several images - just got around to doing this one now as I needed something for an opening image on my website designs.
